CommunityAdvisoryPanel

To identify environmental concerns and provide support to the Hamilton Industrial Environmental Association in their pursuit of a cleaner and healthier environment for the residents of Hamilton.

Hamilton’s VISION 2020 honoured the Community Advisory Panel with a Sustainable Community Recognition Award in the fall of 2003. VISION 2020 is the City of Hamilton's long term vision of a vibrant, healthy, sustainable future. View the Award

The Sustainable Community Recognition Award recognizes the vital role that the Community Advisory Panel (CAP) plays in the local community. Specifically, the criteria recognizes their hard work and commitment effectively:

  • contribute to the fulfillment of the human needs in the Hamilton community
  • support the ecological integrity of Hamilton
  • achieve active participation in the community
  • achieve equity and fairness
  • help build a better future over the long term

CAP members are dedicated to improving Hamilton’s environment through their volunteer efforts. The Panel acts as a direct link between industry, neighbourhood groups and individuals and local environmental community-based initiatives.

CAP has been meeting monthly with corporate representatives of the HIEA-member companies since HIEA began, to exchange information and discuss issues of greatest concern to the community. From their ongoing discussion, CAP helps to set the directions and priorities for HIEA’s activities and for individual member-companies’ programs. As a result of CAP-members being well connected to other local environmental initiatives, they are well informed to make strategic decisions to help support Hamilton’s ecological integrity.

Through constant focus on the mandate of HIEA to continuously improve environmental performance of industry, the CAP is helping to create a healthier environment for future generations.

During 2002, HIEA launched a Community Advisory Panel (CAP) liaison initiative to enable closer contact between member companies and neighbours. CAP members have volunteered to partner directly with industry to learn more about key issues. Volunteers visit plant facilities and meet with company representatives to explore company technologies and practices. CAP members then share information with each other and their neighbours. This process provides industry with additional community input, which helps establish priorities for action and local neighbours are kept better informed.

CAP meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. (excluding July, August and December) at the Dofasco Main Office, 1330 Burlington Street East in Hamilton unless otherwise noted. The meetings are open to all citizens who are interested in attending. To assist us in planning our meetings we ask that you please let us know by email info@hiea.org at least 2 days ahead if you plan on attending.
